Robert D. Melvin

 
Dr. Robert Melvin teaches in the Economics, Applied Communication,
and Executive MBA programs at the University of Denver and in the Communication program at Regis University.  He is the owner of R. D. Melvin and Associates, a training and consulting firm.  His teaching and consulting work center on the application of performance effectiveness issues emphasizing leadership, project management, teambuilding, negotiations, and organizational development.    He is a frequently requested speaker and has a reputation for making presentations that are both pointed and entertaining.     


Dr. Melvin first became interested in leadership and team building issues when he directed teams of investigators for the U.S. G.A.O.  In that capacity, he has worked with many agencies, associations, and foundations including the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Social Security Administration,  Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics, National Wildlife Association, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and a number of other organizations.  Dr. Melvin has received numerous awards for his work and it has resulted in many changes in public policy. 


At the University of Denver, Dr. Melvin teaches a number of undergraduate and graduate courses, facilitates the Emerging Leaders Program, and has taught many courses in the Center for Project Management.  Dr. Melvin also teaches a number of project management and leadership courses through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management including Principles of Project Management, Leading Successful Projects, Managing Project Managers, and Optimizing Project Performance.  He has received many awards for teaching excellence, including the International Communication Association Excellent Teaching Award, Alpha Kappa Psi Distinguished Professor Award, the University of Denver Adjunct Professor of the Year Award, the Women’s College Professor of the Year Award three times, and the Regis University Outstanding Teaching Award.   


Dr. Melvin's work in leadership for the U.S. Army was the subject of a recent article, Meeting the Leadership Challenge, in Defense AT&L Journal.  His work in organizational development and team building was highlighted in U.S.A. Today.  The Japanese business community became familiar with his “virtual reality” project management program in interviews conducted on “Tokyo Today”.  Dr. Melvin’s clients include the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the U.S. Army, Allstate, Children's Hospital, EnCana, Ball Aerospace, CH2MHILL, QWEST, the Colorado School of Mines, the U.S. Dept. of Energy, the Colorado Compensation Insurance Authority, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, the Denver Museum of Natural History, AT&T, Allied Housing, Rose Medical Center, HealthOne, the Women’s Vision Foundation, and Hatch International.
